How This Works
Calories = MET × body weight (kg) × duration (hours). MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) represents exercise intensity relative to rest. Running at ~8 min/mile has MET 7.0, meaning it burns 7× more energy than sitting still. Values from the Compendium of Physical Activities (Ainsworth 2011).
MET-based estimates are population averages — individual variation can be ±15–25% due to fitness level, body composition and efficiency. Fitter individuals often burn fewer calories at the same pace (more efficient). Heart rate monitors are more accurate for individuals. For weight management, track over weeks rather than individual sessions.
